Making Yourself an Attractive Sales and Marketing Candidate

Competition for jobs such as sales and marketing jobs can be keen when you first graduate college, but you can use many of the resources offered by your school to greatly increase your appeal to employers.

Get the skills you need with University of Phoenix - the number one choice for working professionals.

When you're a student, the job search process can seem like light years away. And while you should certainly enjoy your time at school, there are also steps you can take to make yourself an attractive candidate for your desired field -- a sales and marketing job -- when you graduate. Here are some things to consider:
  1. Choose your sales and marketing courses well. When you're thumbing through your course book, trying to choose next semester's sales and marketing courses, take your time and think long term, not short term. Instead of going for the sales and marketing courses that have a reputation for being easy, choose the ones that are going to give you the most diverse and valuable knowledge.
  2. Research your professors. Who has a reputation for having good classes? Are any of your professors already sales and marketing industry leaders? If you develop a rapport with the professor and do well in class, you just might end up getting a post-graduation sales and marketing job out of it.
  3. Internships, Internships. It can't be stressed enough; when it comes time to start applying for sales and marketing jobs, you will not only differentiate yourself by the courses you've taken, but also by the internships you've had. On a practical level, the more sales and marketing jobs or internships you've held, the better. These experiences will give you more contacts to call and to do networking. Besides that, though, employers are likely to be impressed by any candidate who sells themselves well, through a broad yet focused range of experience through internships.
