As a sales and marketing professional, your goal is to be able to sell anything. Don't forget about your first major challenge--selling yourself on your resume and in interviews. After all, if you can't sell yourself as the best person for the job, employers don't have much incentive to hire you. These tips will guide you in your hunt for a sales and marketing job.
Build a Powerful Sales and Marketing Resume
Your sales and marketing resume is a powerful sales tool. Competition is strong for sales and marketing jobs, so you want to highlight your areas of expertise and industry knowledge. Be specific about your accomplishments and describe your responsibilities on projects. Your sales and marketing resume should be action-oriented and show quantifiable sales results that will be meaningful to people outside your company.
Be Persistent
Let potential employers know that you don't give up easily. If you solved a particularly difficult sales problem that really benefited your company, detail that accomplishment. People with sales and marketing jobs need to know how to handle rejection and redirect their energies to accomplish their goals. If you're having a tough time getting a foot in the door for an interview, enlist the help of a colleague to introduce you, or write your own letter of introduction that lets hiring managers know exactly what you will bring to the table. Tell them why you deserve an interview.
Real Life Experience
Even if you don't have a lot of job experience, use your sales and marketing resume to succinctly outline your sales philosophy so you can obtain an entry-level job. Also use your sales and marketing resume to highlight other accomplishments in your life that illustrate your can-do spirit and drive to succeed. During interviews, give examples of situations where you persuaded someone to do something you wanted them to do.
Don't let early rejection stand between you and your dream job. A recent MonsterTRAK survey showed that the sales sector was seeking the most entry-level candidates, and the outlook for jobs in this area is expected to stay strong.
