According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, seven of the 30 fastest-growing occupations will require IT training, with a projected average employment growth rate of 43%.
In addition to this new demand, changes made by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) during the past three months will hamper a company's ability to hire and retain new foreign IT employees requiring H-1B visas. While this is bad news for them, it's great for anyone looking to begin a career in information technology.
A Degree in Information Technology
A March 2005 survey of 50 CIOs from US organizations found that 74% plan to hire internal information technology staff in the near term. That figure is up from 48% in Q4 2004. It's likely that those hires will possess at least a bachelor's degree in information technology. That's why it is even more important for anyone looking to begin a career in IT to pursue a degree in information technology or certification in computer networking.
Why Choose A Career in Information Technology?
IT spending and growth continues to increase. This investment shows that the industry is not only healthy, but will require fresh minds to help companies innovate and succeed. Companies rely on recently-graduated IT professionals to breath fresh air into their projects.
Choosing An IT Training Program
There are many IT training programs, such as computer networking, which can open doors to a career in information technology. These IT training programs can be found in community colleges, technical institutes, and online schools. While they are usually more occupation-specific, they can introduce you to the many different career paths you'll find in the information technology industry. Some of these information technology jobs include Webmaster, database manager, ecommerce manager, and Web developer, and all require specialized IT training.
Getting & Keeping Your IT Job
The best way to find and keep a job in IT is to make yourself more attractive to employers, whether through education, specialization, or innovation. So long as the love affair with technology lasts, a career in information technology will continue to be among the most lucrative and stable career paths you can choose.
