Building International Business Skills

Companies in the United States engage in billions of dollars of trade with other nations each year. In an increasingly global economy, job opportunities with foreign companies here in the United States as well as positions with American companies trading overseas offer those interested an exciting and growing field of opportunity.

But Americans may be at a disadvantage in an international business environment. According to Edward J. Halloran in his book Careers in International Business, "The fact is, many foreign nationals are better educated (except, perhaps, in the technical areas) than their American counterparts." For example, foreign nationals often have superior language fluency and writing skills, he says.

Get the skills you need with University of Phoenix - the number one choice for working professionals.

To increase your employability in international business and trade, here are some areas to focus on:
  • Foreign language skills. If you aren't already somewhat fluent in at least one language other than English, work to become so. In addition to making day-to-day dealings easier, knowing the language of your business colleagues shows respect to their country and culture. Even if you’re not fluent, you may be able to find a position with a company that does business overseas that will be willing to help you continue your language studies while you work for them. Some places to start include language tapes, language courses and publications in your chosen language (online if necessary).
  • International business etiquette. How do business practices in other countries differ from your own culture? Many countries are more formal than the United States in dress and conversation, for example. Take time to learn about the culture you will be dealing with. Check out executiveplanet.com or internationalist.com for starters.
  • Hone your writing skills. Take basic grammar and spelling seriously. Learn how to use an introduction, supporting details and a conclusion to organize your writing smoothly. There are many books and courses available to help you polish your writing abilities.

Earn your degree 100% online. DeVry University provides the flexibility you need to complete your degree whenever and wherever it's convenient for you.

Most important of all, those interested in a career in international business should have a commitment to learning. Conditions in international business are constantly changing. Each new challenge you face offers you an opportunity to learn-and a willingness to learn broadens your world, and earns the respect of those you work with.
