If you've had a taste of travel and want more, then a career in international business could be perfect for you. Working overseas is not for everyone -- employers want reliable people with solid business skills who are self-sufficient and have what it takes to live far from home in another country. It can put a strain on relationships and you could be required to move regularly. However, for the ambitious, this could be a recipe for success.
International Business: What is an Expatriate?
There are a number of ways you can work abroad. If you are hired by a U.S. company to work overseas this is referred to as being an expatriate. Many U.S. businesses still recruit from international finance and business programs to hire people for overseas offices, but the number has dropped off. It is usually more expensive for an American company to hire a U.S. expatriate, as they have to pay you in U.S. dollars.
Finding Business Employers Overseas
If you have foreign language skills--if you speak Spanish for example--then why not target employers in Spanish speaking countries? You can also seek help from local business organizations. For example, the Japan Society of Northern California, which seeks to improve U.S. and Japanese relations, can be an excellent starting point.
Earn Your MBA or International Business Degree
A degree in international business and trade can take many forms. You can earn an international business degree, or pursue an MBA with a focus on International Business. You might also consider a student internship program. Undergrads and graduates can qualify for internships overseas with the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service. These programs usually put you to work in the commercial section of U.S. embassies. This can provide you with valuable experience to get started in a career in international business and finance.
If you have a thirst for adventure and travel then a career in international business could be ideal for you. Take a look at your dreams and ask yourself if you might be happy living life out of a suitcase somewhere overseas. It could be your ticket to a little bit of culture and a lot of professional success!
