Criminal Justice School Can Prepare You for a Law Enforcement Career

The world is always in need of smart, capable people to work in the criminal justice field. A criminal justice degree can help prepare you to respond to all kinds of emergency situations that require the expertise of law enforcement officials.

A Variety of Backgrounds

Getting a criminal justice degree can be the first step toward working in a variety of jobs, including as a police officer, FBI agent, corrections officer, secret service agent, or sheriff. People in the criminal justice field often have backgrounds in political science, criminology, social work, and psychology. In many cases, people interested in going to criminal justice schools have been in the military.

Criminal Justice Degree Can Boost Eligibility

While the educational requirements aren't the same for all criminal justice jobs, a college degree is seen as an asset across the board. Federal jobs in law enforcement generally require applicants to have graduated from college, so a criminal justice degree could boost your chances of being employed by agencies like the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) or U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).

Criminal Justice Jobs May Be Stressful

As the Virginia Tech situation illustrates, some jobs in the criminal justice field can be stressful and even dangerous. Working as a police officer requires that you protect the lives and property of the people in your community, so you have to be ready to step into unknown situations while trying to remain safe.

If you can see yourself working in law enforcement, then going to criminal justice school may be the right way to get started. There are a variety of options for earning an online criminal justice degree or attending classes on campus to help meet your career goals.
