Office administration personnel offer the support businesses need to operate smoothly and efficiently. Often promoted from within, administrative professionals work in virtually all businesses across every industry. If you want to hone a business career, administrative jobs can serve as a launching platform to an upper-level position.

The First Step Toward Professional Success

If you already hold an administrative job and want to pursue a senior position in your company, consider your current station the starting point. Most employers promote office managers and other supervisory positions from within. Holding an administrative job and ascending the ranks gives you the opportunity to learn more about the company and its internal workings.

Administrative Pros Wear Many Hats

Administrative professionals take on many different roles. In one company, the job will entail human resource functions with the office manager handling benefits and the interviewing of new employees. In other companies, administrative support may be sales oriented. Whatever the focus in your position, consider continuing your education in an effort to kick your career to the next level.

Holding an administrative job can be an excellent way to learn the day-to-day functions of an organization, but a degree is best if you're seeking upper-level positions. Depending on the position's focus, you might consider one of the following degrees:

Find a Business Mentor

These are just three examples that could help you advance your career from an administrative support position to one with more responsibility (and, typically, a higher salary). You might consider finding a coach within your organization to mentor you through the process. Management is generally interested in employees who want to better themselves and take an active role in their career. A coach can help you choose the right academic track to help you achieve your career goals.
